COACHING Are you one of those people who is great at motivating others, but can't seem to keep yourself on track? Or maybe you're the type who just gets more done because someone else's deadline is looming. How did I get here? Or, why aren't I there yet? Why is that? Is it from years of "training" as kids, to do as we're instructed by our teachers and parents, or else? All of that training taught us the kind of work ethic we can be proud of, but unfortunately only seems to work when someone else is giving the orders! Our own voice just doesn't seem to get the same respect and obedience we give others. I believe it's simply a subconscious program: years of accepting and performing for authority figures has become nothing more than a habit. Just like Pavlov's dogs,* we have a conditioned response: through the years of childhood, the request of an authority figure conditioned us to respond with action to complete that request. Whether it comes from parents, teachers, police officers, television, spiritual leaders - if we deemed (or were told) that that voice came from an authority figure, well, we did as we were told: do your chores before watching t.v., get good grades so you can get into a good school, obey these laws, buy this product, believe in this type of God. In return, we were given praise, good grades, positive feedback and promises of more of the same rewards for the same hard work. All of this time, we were never taught to listen to our own internal authority figure and to be accountable to ourselves. Or if we were, it's so weak compared to external voices, we continually put our directives to ourselves dead last. What is a Coach? A Coach acts as that other voice, giving you someone to be accountable to, who at the same time asks you to be accountable for your own goals. We take advantage of that built-in conditioned response to perform for someone else, but make sure that you're working towards what it is that you want. Maybe you're one of those people who doesn't really know what you want. A Coach helps you clarify the direction you want to take in your life, and the steps to get there. A Coach also helps you take those steps through "homework," exercises, weekly goals, and many other avenues to keep you motivated and performance-driven. Why should I choose Live & Learn for my Coach? What is the process and what does it cost? From then on, we have a weekly 45-minute phone meeting when we keep your progress on track, answer your questions, adapt strategies, teach new techniques, and - most importantly - share that well-deserved positive feedback that keeps the conditioned-response kid in you performing enthusiastically. Whether your goals are short-term (weight loss before that class reunion?) or longer-term (finding and embarking on a career you feel passionate about), you'll be motivated to stay the course and follow through. Programs are 1-Month, 3-Month, 6-Month and 1-Year, and payable month-to-month:
Wouldn't now be a good time to get started? *Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov discovered while doing other research that the dogs in his lab salivated when anyone in a lab coat came near them. He determined that because the person who fed them wore a lab coat at feeding time, the dogs associated the lab coat with food. He began to experiment with other associative behaviors, the most famous of which was ringing a bell right before feeding his dogs. Pavlov created a conditioned response in the dogs: when the condition was a certain way (bells ringing), a response was generated (dogs salivating). After a short time of bell-ringing and food-bringing, the response was deeply ingrained in the dogs, and from then on no matter what time of day he rang the bell, the dogs salivated. Even if he didn't feed them, they still drooled when they heard the bell. Creating a conditioned response is a simple, predictable process!
